TOP ATM PAPER QUESTIONS
ATM paper sizes vary by manufacturer and model. One common size used by many popular retail ATM machines is 2 1/4" wide × 675' long thermal paper. Before ordering, always verify the paper specifications for your particular ATM model. If you're unsure, contact Supply Chef with your ATM manufacturer and model number and we'll be happy to help.
Supply Chef's 2 1/4" × 675' ATM thermal rolls fit many popular ATM models, including models from GenMega, Hantle, Tranax, and Triton. Because ATM configurations can vary, we recommend confirming your exact model before ordering.
Check your ATM's manual or existing paper roll for the required paper width, roll diameter, and core size. Supply Chef's ATM rolls are 2 1/4" (57mm) wide, 675 feet long, approximately 6" in roll diameter, and have a 3/8" inside-diameter core. The paper is premium 80 GSM. Every case also includes a 3/8" × 3" acrylic pin designed to fit perfectly through the core of our ATM rolls. Still unsure? Send us your ATM make and model and we'll help verify compatibility.
Yes. ATM paper must feed reliably and produce clear, readable transaction receipts. Lower-quality or incorrectly sized paper can contribute to light printing, excessive paper dust, feeding problems, and paper jams. Supply Chef uses premium 80 GSM heavyweight, BPA-free, lint-free thermal paper designed for dependable commercial ATM use.
The first measurement is the width of the paper and the second is the length of paper on each roll. A 2 1/4" × 675' roll is therefore 2 1/4 inches wide and contains approximately 675 feet of thermal paper.
Most modern retail ATMs use thermal receipt paper, although requirements vary by machine. Thermal ATM printers create receipts using heat instead of ink, toner, or printer ribbons.
No. Direct thermal ATM printers use heat to create text and images directly on the thermal coating of the paper. There is no ink, toner, or ribbon to replace.
Absolutely. Send us the manufacturer and model number of your ATM, and we'll help you determine whether our 2 1/4" × 675' ATM paper is the correct fit.
ATM PAPER SIZE & SPECIFICATIONS
Our ATM thermal paper is 2 1/4 inches wide, or approximately 57mm.
Each Supply Chef ATM roll contains approximately 675 feet of thermal paper. The long roll length is designed for commercial ATM applications where minimizing paper changes is important.
A new Supply Chef 2 1/4" × 675' ATM roll has an approximate outside diameter of 6 inches. Always verify that your ATM's paper compartment can accommodate this roll size.

ATM PAPER QUALITY
Yes. Our ATM thermal paper is designed to be lint-free, helping reduce paper dust and buildup inside the printer mechanism.
Yes. Our ATM paper includes an end-of-roll warning stripe, helping operators recognize when a roll is approaching replacement.
ATM receipts may contain transaction amounts, dates, ATM locations, reference numbers, and other important details. Good thermal sensitivity and print contrast help produce clear, easy-to-read receipts for customers.
Yes. Like other thermal receipts, ATM receipts can fade when subjected to excessive heat, direct sunlight, oils, chemicals, or improper storage. Customers who need a transaction record for an extended period should consider making a digital copy of the receipt.
TROUBLESHOOTING ATM PAPER
One possible cause is that the thermal paper has been installed with the heat-sensitive side facing away from the printhead. Check that the roll is installed correctly. If the problem continues, the printer may require cleaning or service.
Firmly scratch each side of the paper with your fingernail. The thermally coated side will normally produce a dark line from the friction.
Light printing can result from a dirty or worn printhead, printer settings, improperly stored paper, or poor-quality or incompatible thermal paper.
Paper jams can result from incorrect paper width, an oversized roll diameter, incorrect core or installation, damaged paper edges, excessive paper dust, debris inside the printer, or printer mechanical problems. Always confirm that the paper specifications match your ATM.
Paper width is only one measurement. Even if a roll is 2 1/4" wide, its outside diameter or core configuration may be too large or otherwise incompatible with your ATM. Compare the complete specifications before ordering replacement rolls.
STORING ATM PAPER
Store unused thermal ATM rolls in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight, excessive heat, moisture, oils, and chemicals. Keeping unused rolls inside their original packaging until needed can also help protect the thermal coating.
We don't recommend long-term storage in a vehicle. Cars, trucks, and service vehicles can become extremely hot, particularly during the summer, and excessive heat can damage thermal paper.
Yes. Running out of receipt paper can create unnecessary service calls and inconvenience customers. ATM operators should maintain enough replacement rolls for their normal transaction volume and service schedule.

Supply Chef — Premium ATM Receipt Paper for Commercial ATM Operators
Bond & Carbonless Receipt Paper
Supply Chef • 1-Ply 3" × 150' Bond & 2-Ply 3" × 90' White/Canary Carbonless
A practical guide to bond and carbonless receipt paper for restaurant kitchens, impact printers, order tickets, and other commercial applications.
TOP BOND & CARBONLESS PAPER QUESTIONS
Bond receipt paper is non-thermal paper commonly used in impact printers. Unlike direct thermal paper, bond paper does not react to heat. The printer physically strikes an ink ribbon against the paper to create the printed image.
1-ply bond paper produces one printed copy. 2-ply carbonless paper produces two copies from the same print job. Supply Chef's 2-ply rolls use a white top sheet and a canary/yellow second sheet.
Choose 1-ply when you only need one printed kitchen ticket or receipt. Choose 2-ply when you need two copies of the same ticket, such as one copy for the kitchen and another for expo, management, records, or another station.
2-ply white/canary paper contains two layers. The printer creates the original on the white top sheet while pressure transfers the same information to the canary/yellow second sheet. This creates two copies without using traditional loose carbon paper.
Yes. Bond and carbonless rolls are intended for impact printers that use an ink ribbon. The printer strikes the ribbon against the paper to create the image. This is different from direct thermal printing, which uses heat and requires no ribbon.
Many restaurant impact printers use approximately 3-inch-wide bond or carbonless rolls. Supply Chef's bond paper is suitable for many compatible impact printers, including common Epson TM-U220 configurations and certain Bixolon SRP-270 and SRP-275 models. Always verify your exact printer and media specifications before ordering.
Impact printers using bond paper are popular in restaurant kitchens because the printed image is made with ink rather than a heat-sensitive coating. This makes bond tickets well suited for hot kitchen environments where thermal paper may darken or become difficult to read when exposed to excessive heat.
Check the printer manufacturer and model number, then verify the required paper width, maximum roll diameter, ply count, and whether the printer supports multi-ply media. If you're unsure, send Supply Chef your printer make and model and we'll help identify the appropriate roll.
1-PLY BOND PAPER
Supply Chef's 1-ply bond rolls measure 3 inches wide × 150 feet long and are designed for compatible impact receipt and kitchen printers.
Supply Chef 3" × 150' 1-ply bond paper is packaged 50 rolls per case.
1-ply bond paper is commonly used for kitchen order tickets, restaurant impact printers, receipts, and other applications where only one printed copy is needed.
Choose 1-ply if your operation only needs one copy of each printed ticket. It avoids the additional second copy and generally provides more paper length per roll than comparable multi-ply rolls.
Yes. Supply Chef's 1-ply bond rolls include an end-of-roll warning stripe to help employees recognize when the roll is nearing replacement.
Yes. Supply Chef 1-ply bond paper is BPA-free. Bond paper does not rely on the heat-sensitive coating used by direct thermal paper.
Supply Chef's 1-ply bond paper is designed for clean, dependable commercial printing with low-lint performance to help reduce unnecessary paper dust inside compatible printers.
Supply Chef's 3" × 150' 1-ply bond roll has an approximate outside diameter of 2 7/8 inches. Always verify your printer's maximum roll capacity.
2-PLY WHITE/CANARY CARBONLESS PAPER
Supply Chef's 2-ply carbonless rolls measure 3 inches wide × 90 feet long and contain white and canary/yellow layers.
Supply Chef 3" × 90' 2-ply white/canary carbonless paper is packaged 50 rolls per case.
A 2-ply roll contains two layers of paper wound together. Because two sheets occupy more space on the roll, the total linear footage is typically shorter than a comparable 1-ply roll designed for the same printer compartment.
White/canary describes the two paper colors. The top or original copy is white, while the second copy is canary yellow. The different colors make it easy for employees to distinguish the original from the duplicate.
No. Modern carbonless paper is designed to create the duplicate through pressure-sensitive chemistry between the sheets, eliminating the need for a separate traditional carbon sheet.
Two copies can support workflows where the same order information is needed in two places. For example, one copy might remain with the kitchen line while the second goes to expo, a prep station, management, or another part of the operation.
Yes. The impact printer uses an ink ribbon to create the image on the white top sheet. The mechanical pressure of printing simultaneously transfers the information to the canary second sheet.
Yes. After printing, the two layers can be separated so each copy can be used where needed.
1-PLY VS. 2-PLY
Supply Chef's 1-ply roll contains 150 feet, while the 2-ply roll contains 90 feet of two-layer media. Actual replacement frequency depends on ticket length and transaction volume, but a 1-ply roll will generally produce more linear feet of single-copy tickets before replacement.
Not necessarily. 2-ply is better when your workflow requires two copies. If only one copy is needed, 1-ply is usually the simpler choice. The correct product depends on how your restaurant handles printed orders.
Only if the printer is designed to support the size and thickness of multi-ply media. Check your printer specifications before switching paper types.
Many impact printers that accept 2-ply media can also use compatible 1-ply bond paper, but always confirm the manufacturer's paper specifications.
Not necessarily. Ribbon requirements are determined by the printer model. Use the ribbon specified by the printer manufacturer regardless of whether you're using compatible 1-ply or 2-ply media.
Separate the edge of the paper. 1-ply has a single sheet. 2-ply has two layers, typically a white top sheet and a colored second sheet such as canary yellow.
THERMAL VS. BOND & IMPACT PRINTING
Thermal paper has a heat-sensitive coating and prints without ink or ribbons. Bond paper is ordinary non-thermal paper and is typically printed by an impact printer using an ink ribbon.
No. Use the media specified by the printer manufacturer. An impact printer is designed to strike an ink ribbon against bond or compatible multi-ply paper.
No. Direct thermal printers require heat-sensitive thermal paper. Regular bond paper will not produce the intended image when passed through a direct thermal printhead.
Thermal paper is designed to react to heat. Excessive heat from kitchen equipment, heat lamps, or other sources can activate the coating and darken the paper. Bond paper uses ink instead, which is one reason impact printing remains popular in kitchens.
For many kitchen environments, impact-printed bond paper is a practical choice because the printed image does not depend on a heat-sensitive thermal coating. Printer placement and operating conditions should still follow the equipment manufacturer's requirements.
PRINTER COMPATIBILITY & RIBBONS
Supply Chef's 3-inch bond paper is suitable for many Epson TM-U220 impact-printer configurations. Because printer setups can vary, confirm your exact model and paper specifications before ordering.
Epson TM-U220 impact printers commonly use approximately 3-inch-wide roll paper, with supported media depending on the model and configuration. Supply Chef offers 3" 1-ply bond and 3" 2-ply carbonless options for compatible applications.
Supply Chef's 3-inch bond paper is suitable for certain compatible Bixolon impact printers, including common SRP-270 and SRP-275 applications. Verify the exact printer specifications before purchasing.
An impact printer ribbon is an inked ribbon positioned between the printer mechanism and the paper. The printhead strikes the ribbon against the paper, transferring ink to form letters, numbers, and graphics.
Common signs include light or faded printing, uneven print darkness, or tickets that remain faint even after the printer and paper have been checked. Replace the ribbon with the correct model specified for your printer.
Yes. Even high-quality bond paper can print lightly if the ribbon is old, dry, incorrectly installed, or incompatible with the printer.
Yes. Send us the manufacturer and exact model number from the printer label. We'll help determine whether 1-ply bond or 2-ply carbonless paper is appropriate.
RESTAURANT & KITCHEN APPLICATIONS
Kitchen printer paper generally refers to roll paper used to print food orders in restaurant kitchens. Depending on the printer, this may be 1-ply bond, 2-ply carbonless, or another impact-compatible media.
Impact printers physically strike pins against an ink ribbon and paper. That mechanical action creates the familiar printing sound and can also be useful in a busy kitchen because employees may hear when a new ticket prints.
Yes, when the bar printer is a compatible impact printer. Some restaurants use impact printers in bars or service areas where durable ink-printed tickets are preferred.
Yes. A duplicate can support workflows where one copy follows food preparation while another stays with the packaged order, expo station, or front counter.
Yes, if the receipt printer is designed for bond media and uses an appropriate ink ribbon. However, many modern front-of-house receipt printers use direct thermal paper instead.
Impact printers remain useful in environments where heat exposure is a concern or duplicate carbonless copies are needed. Their audible printing can also help alert kitchen staff to incoming orders.
TROUBLESHOOTING
The most common cause is a worn or dry ink ribbon. Other possibilities include an incorrectly installed ribbon, printer mechanical issues, or unsuitable media. Check the ribbon first.
A faint second copy can result from insufficient impact pressure, printer condition, incorrect media loading, incompatible paper, or other mechanical issues. Make sure the printer supports multi-ply carbonless media.
Possible causes include incorrect paper width or diameter, damaged paper edges, improper loading, debris inside the printer, a worn mechanism, or using media that exceeds the printer's specifications.
Unlike thermal paper, bond paper needs an ink ribbon. If the printer feeds blank paper, check that the ribbon is installed correctly and still contains usable ink.
Missing or incomplete characters may indicate a worn ribbon, dirty or damaged print mechanism, or failing impact-printhead pins. Printer maintenance or service may be required.
Multi-ply media is thicker than 1-ply paper. Confirm that your printer supports 2-ply rolls and that the paper is loaded and aligned according to the manufacturer's instructions.
STORAGE & HANDLING
Store bond rolls in a clean, dry location protected from moisture, excessive humidity, oils, chemicals, and physical damage. Keeping unused rolls in their original case helps protect them.
Keep carbonless rolls cool, dry, and protected from excessive heat, humidity, chemicals, and pressure. Proper storage helps preserve the quality of both the original and duplicate copy.
A dry storeroom is preferable. Avoid long-term storage next to ovens, steam, dish areas, or locations where rolls may be exposed to moisture, grease, or excessive heat.
Yes. If your operation depends on impact kitchen printers, maintaining spare compatible ribbons along with paper inventory can help prevent downtime when a ribbon becomes too light to use.

ERC 30/34/38 Printer Ribbons
Supply Chef • Black/Red & Black Impact Printer Ribbon Cartridges
A practical guide to ERC 30/34/38 compatible ribbon cartridges for restaurant kitchen printers, impact receipt printers, bond paper, and carbonless paper.
TOP PRINTER RIBBON QUESTIONS
An ERC 30/34/38 ribbon is an inked nylon ribbon cartridge used in compatible impact receipt and kitchen printers. The printer's impact mechanism strikes the ribbon against bond or carbonless paper to create the printed image.
A Black ribbon prints in black only. A Black/Red ribbon contains both black and red ink sections, allowing compatible printers and software configurations to print selected information in red while the rest prints in black.
Choose Black if your printer and workflow only require black printing. Choose Black/Red if your compatible printer is configured to use two-color printing, such as highlighting modifiers, alerts, or other selected information in red. Always confirm your printer and POS configuration.
Many Epson TM-U220 impact printer configurations use ERC-38 family ribbon cartridges, including Black and Black/Red versions. Verify your exact printer model and requirements before ordering.
ERC 30/34/38 style ribbons are used by many compatible impact receipt and kitchen printers, including common Epson TM-U220 and TM-U200 applications and other printer models designed for this ribbon family. Always verify the exact printer model before purchasing.
Common signs include faded or light printing, uneven print darkness, difficult-to-read kitchen tickets, or red and black areas becoming weak. If the printer is functioning normally and the paper is correct, a worn ribbon is often the first thing to replace.
Turn off or safely open the printer according to the manufacturer's instructions, remove the old cartridge, position the new cartridge correctly over the print mechanism, and gently turn the ribbon tension knob if needed to remove slack. Never force the cartridge into place.
Absolutely. Send us the manufacturer and model number from your printer label and we'll help determine whether an ERC 30/34/38 Black or Black/Red ribbon is appropriate.
BLACK VS. BLACK/RED RIBBONS
A Black ERC ribbon is used when the printer only needs to produce black text and graphics. It is a straightforward choice for many kitchen tickets, receipts, and impact-printing applications.
A Black/Red ribbon allows compatible printers to produce both black and red printing. Restaurants may use red printing to make selected information stand out, depending on the POS software and printer configuration.
Not necessarily. The printer and POS software must support and be configured for two-color printing. Installing a Black/Red ribbon alone does not guarantee that red printing will be used.
Yes. When supported by the POS and printer, red can help visually emphasize selected modifiers, warnings, special instructions, or other information that staff should notice quickly.
Often, if the printer supports both ribbon types. However, anything configured to print in red will no longer appear as intended. Confirm your printer and operational requirements before switching.
Only if the printer supports the Black/Red ribbon configuration. Check the printer specifications before changing ribbon types.
Pricing and ribbon life can vary. The better choice should be based primarily on whether your operation benefits from two-color printing rather than color alone.
RIBBON SIZE, PACKAGING & CONSTRUCTION
Supply Chef ERC 30/34/38 compatible printer ribbons are packaged 12 cartridges per box.
Yes. Each ribbon cartridge is individually sealed to help protect it from drying, dust, and contamination until it is ready to be used.
Supply Chef ERC 30/34/38 compatible cartridges use approximately 1/2-inch-wide × 5.5-yard nylon ink ribbon.
Individual packaging helps keep unused ribbons protected from air, dust, dirt, and other environmental exposure during storage.
The inked ribbon material is nylon, designed to move repeatedly through the cartridge as the impact printer strikes it during printing.
The cartridge itself is intended to be replaced when the ribbon becomes too light or worn. For dependable printing, replace the complete cartridge rather than attempting to re-ink a depleted ribbon.
PRINTER COMPATIBILITY
Supply Chef ERC 30/34/38 compatible ribbons are intended for many Epson TM-U220 impact printer applications. Confirm the exact model and ribbon requirements before ordering.
ERC 30/34/38 style ribbons are commonly associated with compatible Epson TM-U200 series impact printers. Verify your exact printer model and ribbon specification.
The ERC-30/34/38 designation is commonly used for a family of compatible ribbon cartridges, but printer compatibility should always be verified by model. Do not rely solely on physical appearance.
No. Kitchen printers use different ribbon cartridges and some use thermal media with no ribbon at all. Check the printer model before ordering.
Look for a manufacturer label on the front, side, bottom, or rear of the printer. The label typically lists the brand and model number. A photo of this label can be sent to Supply Chef for help.
The physical printer determines which ribbon cartridge fits. A restaurant may use a particular POS system while the connected kitchen printer is manufactured by Epson, Bixolon, Star, or another company.
Yes. Restaurants can have several printer models across the kitchen, bar, expo, and front counter. Always verify each printer before standardizing ribbons.
BOND & CARBONLESS PAPER
Compatible impact printers commonly use bond or carbonless roll paper. Supply Chef offers 3" × 150' 1-ply bond paper and 3" × 90' 2-ply white/canary carbonless paper for compatible applications.
Yes, when both the ribbon and paper are compatible with the printer. The ink ribbon transfers the printed image onto the single sheet of bond paper.
Yes, in printers designed for multi-ply media. The ribbon prints the white top sheet while impact pressure transfers the same information to the canary second copy.
Some compatible impact printers and ribbon applications can support 3-ply media, but the printer itself must be rated for that media thickness. Always check the printer specifications.
Thermal paper is not the normal media for an impact ribbon printer. Impact printers are designed to use an ink ribbon with compatible bond or carbonless paper.
The paper provides the printing surface, while the ribbon supplies the ink. The impact printhead strikes the inked ribbon against the paper to form the characters.
INSTALLATION & REPLACEMENT
Follow the printer manufacturer's instructions. Turning the printer off before opening and working around the print mechanism is generally a sensible practice unless the manufacturer directs otherwise.
Open the printer cover according to the manufacturer's instructions and carefully lift or release the old cartridge from its mounting position. Avoid forcing the cartridge or print mechanism.
The tension knob advances the ribbon and removes slack. After installing the cartridge, gently turn the knob in the indicated direction so the ribbon sits properly in the print path.
The cartridge may be misaligned, the ribbon may not match the printer, or the old cartridge may not have been completely removed. Verify the printer model and cartridge compatibility rather than forcing it.
Use the cartridge's tension knob to gently take up slack in the direction indicated on the cartridge. Make sure the ribbon is correctly positioned around the printhead.
There is no single replacement schedule. Ribbon life depends on print volume, ticket length, print density, usage patterns, storage, and operating conditions. Replace it when print quality becomes too light or inconsistent.
TROUBLESHOOTING
A worn or dry ribbon is one of the most common causes. Check that the ribbon is installed correctly and replace it if necessary. Printer wear, dirty components, or mechanical issues can also affect print quality.
Uneven printing can result from a poorly seated ribbon cartridge, ribbon slack, a worn ribbon, debris, or a printer mechanism problem. Recheck installation and follow the printer manufacturer's maintenance instructions.
Confirm that you installed a Black/Red ribbon and that your printer and POS software support and are configured for red printing. If red was working previously, the ribbon may be worn or incorrectly installed.
Ribbon tangling can result from improper installation, excessive slack, forcing the cartridge, a damaged cartridge, or a printer mechanism problem. Stop printing and correct the issue rather than continuing to run a tangled ribbon.
A damaged cartridge, incorrect installation, improper tension, or printer mechanical problem may cause the ribbon to leave its normal path. Replace damaged cartridges and inspect the printer according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Check that a usable ribbon cartridge is installed and correctly positioned between the print mechanism and paper. A completely depleted, missing, or improperly installed ribbon can result in blank or nearly blank tickets.
Yes. If a new, correctly installed ribbon still produces missing characters, uneven printing, or other problems, the printhead, impact pins, platen, or other printer components may require cleaning or service.
STORAGE & HANDLING
Keep unused cartridges sealed in their individual packaging and store them in a cool, dry location away from excessive heat, direct sunlight, moisture, and chemicals.
Yes. Inked ribbons can lose performance over time, especially when exposed to air or excessive heat. Keeping unused cartridges sealed until needed helps preserve them.
Yes. Restaurants that depend on impact kitchen printers should keep spare compatible ribbons on hand. A faded ribbon can quickly make kitchen tickets difficult to read during service.
Long-term storage in a hot vehicle is not recommended. Excessive heat can negatively affect the ink and cartridge materials.
No. Leave unused ribbons individually sealed until you're ready to install them.
RESTAURANT & KITCHEN USE
Impact printers remain popular because they use ink on bond paper rather than heat-sensitive thermal paper. They are practical in hot kitchen environments and can support multi-ply carbonless tickets.
Impact printers mechanically strike pins against an ink ribbon and paper. The familiar printing sound is normal and can even alert kitchen staff that a new order has arrived.
Yes, if the bar printer is a compatible impact printer that uses the ERC 30/34/38 ribbon family.
When supported and configured correctly, red printing can visually distinguish selected information from ordinary black text, helping important details stand out on a busy kitchen ticket.
Yes. A clear original is important, and proper printer impact is also necessary to produce a readable second carbonless copy. Maintaining the correct ribbon and printer condition supports consistent ticket quality.

Supply Chef — Printer Ribbons, Bond Paper & Carbonless Paper for Restaurant Impact Printers
Receipt Paper & POS Paper
Master Website FAQ • Revised August 2026
Choosing the right receipt paper shouldn't be complicated. Whether you operate a restaurant, bar, retail store, food truck, hotel, or other business, Supply Chef is here to help you find dependable receipt paper that fits your equipment and keeps your business running.
TOP RECEIPT PAPER QUESTIONS
Thermal receipt paper is specially coated paper designed for direct thermal printers. Heat from the printer's printhead activates the coating and creates the text, graphics, barcodes, or QR codes on the receipt. Because the image is created with heat, thermal printers do not require ink cartridges, toner, or ribbons.
Start with the make and model number of your printer. Check the manufacturer's specifications, look inside the printer compartment for a media label, or compare the dimensions with your existing roll. If you're unsure, contact Supply Chef with the printer model and we'll help you determine the correct paper.
One of the most common sizes for full-size POS receipt printers is 3 1/8" wide thermal paper, also commonly referred to as 80mm thermal paper. Smaller payment terminals frequently use 2 1/4" wide thermal paper. Always confirm your printer's specifications before ordering.
A thermal printer contains a heated printhead that selectively heats tiny areas of the thermal paper as it passes through the printer. Those heated areas darken to create the printed receipt. This allows thermal printers to print quickly and quietly with relatively few moving parts.
No. Direct thermal receipt printers do not use ink, toner, or printer ribbons. The special coating on thermal paper reacts directly to heat generated by the printhead.
Thermal printers are popular in restaurants because they're fast, quiet, reliable, and don't require employees to replace ink cartridges or ribbons. They're especially well suited for high-volume front-of-house POS printing.
Thermal paper is widely used by restaurants, bars, coffee shops, retail stores, grocery stores, hotels, convenience stores, salons, pharmacies, entertainment venues, food trucks, and many other businesses. It is also commonly used in payment terminals, kiosks, ATMs, and other transaction printers.
Not necessarily. Many modern receipts are printed on thermal paper, but some receipt and kitchen printers use standard bond paper with an ink ribbon. That's why it's important to know what type of printer you have before ordering.
RECEIPT PAPER SIZES
The first number is the width of the paper and the second is the approximate length of paper on the roll. A 3 1/8" × 230' roll is 3 1/8 inches wide and approximately 230 feet long. This is a very common commercial POS receipt-paper size.
Approximately, yes. 3 1/8 inches equals about 79.4mm, which is commonly marketed as 80mm thermal receipt paper.
2 1/4" thermal rolls are commonly used in compact receipt printers, credit-card terminals, payment devices, mobile printers, and other smaller machines. The required roll length and diameter depend on the individual device.
It means the roll is 2 1/4 inches wide and approximately 50 feet long. This compact size is commonly found in payment terminals and other small receipt printers.
The primary difference is the width. 3 1/8" paper is wider and commonly used in full-size POS receipt printers. 2 1/4" paper is narrower and commonly found in payment terminals and compact printers.
Yes. A longer roll generally means fewer paper changes, which can be particularly valuable in busy restaurants and retail businesses. However, a longer roll normally has a larger outside diameter, so it must still physically fit inside your printer.
Sometimes. The paper width may be correct while the roll itself is too large to fit inside the printer compartment. Always check the maximum roll diameter supported by your printer.
No. Two rolls can have the same width but differ in length, paper weight, roll diameter, core size, coating quality, and overall performance.
Measure straight across the width of the paper from one edge to the other. You can also measure the outside diameter of a new roll and the inside diameter of its core. If you still have the original carton, the exact dimensions may be printed on the label.
FINDING THE RIGHT PAPER FOR YOUR PRINTER
Absolutely. Send us the brand and model number of your printer or payment terminal and we'll help determine which paper you need. A photo of the printer and existing paper roll can also be helpful.
Many popular Epson countertop POS printers use 3 1/8" (80mm) thermal receipt paper, but specifications vary by model. Always confirm the exact Epson model before ordering.
Many full-size Star Micronics POS printers use 3 1/8" (80mm) thermal paper, while other models may require different sizes. Check the exact model before purchasing.
Many restaurant POS systems use standard commercial thermal receipt printers that accept 3 1/8" thermal paper. However, the POS software itself doesn't determine the paper size—the connected printer does.
Yes. For example, a restaurant may use 3 1/8" thermal paper at the front counter, 2 1/4" thermal paper in a payment terminal, and bond paper in a kitchen impact printer.
THERMAL VS. BOND PAPER
Thermal paper uses a heat-sensitive coating and does not require ink or ribbon. Bond paper is conventional paper and generally requires a printer ribbon or another printing method to create the image.
Restaurant kitchens can be hot environments. Impact printers using bond paper and ribbons have traditionally been popular for kitchen tickets because the printed image does not depend on a heat-sensitive thermal coating.
No. Use the type of paper specified by the printer manufacturer. A printer designed for bond paper and an ink ribbon operates differently from a direct thermal printer.
No. A direct thermal printer requires heat-sensitive thermal paper to produce an image. Regular bond paper will feed through the printer without producing the intended thermal print.
PAPER QUALITY & 60 GSM
GSM stands for grams per square meter and is a measurement of the paper's basis weight. Generally, a higher GSM indicates a heavier paper, although GSM alone does not determine overall thermal-paper quality.
60 GSM thermal paper has a basis weight of approximately 60 grams per square meter. It provides a substantial commercial feel while still being designed to feed smoothly through compatible thermal receipt printers.
Paper weight is only one measure of quality, but a well-manufactured 60 GSM paper can provide a more substantial feel and excellent receipt performance. Coating consistency, smoothness, sensitivity, and manufacturing quality are also important.
Supply Chef's commercial thermal paper is designed for businesses that need dependable everyday performance. We believe receipt paper should feel substantial, print clearly, feed consistently, and perform reliably in demanding restaurant and retail environments.
It can. When two rolls have the same outside diameter, thicker paper generally means fewer total feet can fit on the roll. That's why comparing only the outside size of two rolls can be misleading.
No. Thermal paper can vary significantly in weight, coating consistency, smoothness, sensitivity, dust levels, roll construction, and manufacturing tolerances. Price per case doesn't always tell the whole story.
Poorly manufactured paper may produce more paper dust, inconsistent feeding, weak print contrast, or other performance issues. Using properly sized, good-quality paper and keeping your printer clean can help maintain reliable operation.
BPA & RECEIPT PAPER
BPA-free thermal paper is manufactured without Bisphenol A (BPA) as the developer in its thermal coating.
Yes. Supply Chef thermal receipt paper is BPA-free. This is an important feature of the receipt paper we provide for restaurants, retailers, hospitality businesses, and other commercial customers.
Receipt paper is handled frequently by employees and customers. Many businesses therefore specifically seek BPA-free thermal paper as part of their purchasing standards.
Quality BPA-free thermal paper is designed to provide the same basic function: clear, dependable thermal printing without requiring ink or toner. Print performance ultimately depends on paper quality, printer condition, and compatibility.
TROUBLESHOOTING RECEIPT PRINTING
One of the most common reasons is that the roll has been installed backwards. Only the thermally sensitive side of standard direct thermal paper responds to the printhead. Remove the roll, reverse it, and try printing again.
Try scratching each side firmly with your fingernail. The thermal side will normally create a dark mark from the friction.
Possible causes include a dirty or worn printhead, incorrect print-density settings, old or improperly stored paper, or poor-quality thermal paper.
A dirty or damaged thermal printhead can cause missing areas or vertical white lines. Cleaning the printhead according to the printer manufacturer's instructions may resolve the issue.
Thermal paper reacts to heat. Leaving rolls near heaters, in extremely hot vehicles, or against other hot surfaces can cause unwanted darkening.
Possible causes include an incorrect roll size, an oversized roll, poor alignment, damaged paper edges, debris in the printer, or a mechanical problem.
Excess paper dust can accumulate inside a printer over time. Clean, properly manufactured paper can help reduce buildup, but thermal printers should still be cleaned according to the manufacturer's maintenance recommendations.
Poor print contrast, a dirty printhead, incorrect printer settings, or low-quality paper can reduce barcode and QR-code readability. Try cleaning the printer and printing another receipt.
Yes. Compatible thermal printers can print logos, graphics, barcodes, and QR codes in addition to ordinary receipt text. The clarity depends on the printer, settings, and paper quality.
STORING RECEIPT PAPER
Keep unused rolls in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and excessive heat. Keeping rolls inside their original cases until needed also helps protect them.
Yes, provided the storeroom remains reasonably cool and dry. Avoid storing thermal paper directly beside ovens, heaters, hot-water equipment, or areas with excessive moisture.
Short periods may not cause a problem, but vehicles can become extremely hot. Long-term storage inside a hot car, truck, or delivery vehicle is not recommended.
Thermal images can deteriorate with prolonged exposure to heat, sunlight, oils, chemicals, or certain plastics. Important receipts should be stored appropriately or digitally copied when long-term record retention is necessary.
Thermal paper doesn't typically "expire" like food, but improper or prolonged storage can reduce its printing performance. Properly stored paper generally maintains its usefulness much longer than rolls exposed to heat, sunlight, or moisture.
BUYING RECEIPT PAPER FOR A BUSINESS
For businesses that use paper regularly, purchasing by the case is generally more economical than buying a few rolls at a time. It also reduces the chance of running out during a busy shift.
That depends on transaction volume, number of printers, and how quickly new supplies can arrive. As a general business practice, maintaining several weeks of normal usage provides a useful safety cushion.
Track how many rolls your business uses during a typical week. Multiply that number by four for an approximate monthly requirement, then add additional inventory as safety stock. For multi-location groups, calculate each location separately because usage can vary substantially.
Don't wait until the last roll. A good practice is to establish a minimum inventory level and reorder when you reach that point. For busy restaurants, opening the final unopened case is an easy visual reminder that it's time to reorder.

RESTAURANT & BUSINESS-SPECIFIC QUESTIONS
The best receipt paper is the paper that correctly matches your printer while providing dependable feeding and clear print quality. For many front-of-house restaurant POS printers, 3 1/8" thermal paper is the standard choice.
It depends on the printer. Some kitchens use impact printers with 1-ply bond paper, while others use thermal printers or kitchen display systems. Always identify the printer before ordering paper.
Bars generally benefit from reliable thermal paper that prints quickly and clearly during high-volume service. Many full-size bar POS receipt printers use 3 1/8" thermal paper.
Many coffee shops use the same 3 1/8" thermal paper commonly found in restaurant POS systems, although smaller terminals and mobile devices may use 2 1/4" rolls.
Full-size retail POS printers frequently use 3 1/8" thermal receipt paper, while standalone payment terminals may use narrower 2 1/4" rolls.
Food trucks often use compact POS systems and mobile payment equipment. Depending on the printer, they may use either 3 1/8" or 2 1/4" thermal paper.
Hotels may use several paper sizes across front desks, restaurants, bars, gift shops, and other departments. 3 1/8" thermal paper is common in full-size POS receipt printers, but each printer should be checked individually.
CHOOSING A RECEIPT-PAPER SUPPLIER
Don't compare price alone. Consider correct printer compatibility, paper width and roll length, paper weight, thermal coating quality, BPA-free construction, consistent roll sizing, case quantity, supplier reliability, shipping costs, and volume pricing. The goal is to find the best overall value for your business, not simply the lowest advertised price per roll.

Sticky Thermal Paper Rolls
Supply Chef • Center Sticky & Full Face Sticky • 3 1/8" × 170'
A practical guide to Supply Chef liner-free direct thermal sticky paper for restaurants, kitchens, takeout, delivery, drive-thru, catering, and prepared-food operations.
TOP STICKY PAPER QUESTIONS
Sticky thermal paper is direct thermal paper with adhesive on the back, allowing the printed ticket or label to attach directly to compatible bags, boxes, cups, food containers, and other packaging. Supply Chef sticky paper is liner-free, so there is no backing liner to peel away and discard. Print, cut, and stick.
The difference is the adhesive coverage on the back of the paper. Center Sticky has adhesive concentrated through the center portion, leaving non-adhesive areas along the outer edges. Full Face Sticky provides broader adhesive coverage across the back for applications where greater surface contact is preferred. Both Supply Chef options are 3 1/8" × 170' direct thermal liner-free rolls.
Choose based on how your operation uses the printed ticket. Center Sticky is a strong choice when you want secure attachment with easy-to-grab outer edges. Full Face Sticky is better when broader adhesive contact and a stronger hold across the label are preferred. If you're unsure, Supply Chef can help you choose.
Both Supply Chef Center Sticky and Full Face Sticky rolls measure 3 1/8" wide × 170' long. They are intended for compatible liner-free direct thermal printers used in restaurants and other food-service environments.
Sticky thermal paper requires a printer designed and configured to handle liner-free adhesive media. Compatible equipment may include certain Epson TM-L90 liner-free configurations and Epson TM-L100 printers. Always verify your exact printer model and configuration before ordering.
No. Supply Chef sticky paper is direct thermal media. A compatible printer uses heat to create the image directly on the paper, so no ink, toner, or printer ribbon is required.
Liner-free sticky paper has adhesive on the back without a disposable release liner. It feeds through a compatible liner-free printer and can be applied after printing and cutting. This eliminates the backing material associated with traditional adhesive labels.
Sticky tickets help restaurants identify and organize takeout, delivery, drive-thru, catering, and prepared-food orders. Employees can attach printed order information directly to the appropriate package, helping keep the ticket with the correct order during preparation, staging, pickup, and delivery.
CENTER STICKY VS. FULL FACE STICKY
Center Sticky paper places the adhesive primarily through the center area on the back of the ticket while leaving outer edge areas non-adhesive. This provides secure attachment while making the edges easier to grasp when removing or repositioning the ticket.
Full Face Sticky paper provides adhesive coverage across substantially more of the back surface. It is designed for applications where broader contact with the package or container is preferred.
Center Sticky can be useful when employees need the ticket to stay attached but also want convenient non-sticky edges for handling and removal. It is well suited to many everyday takeout and order-labeling applications.
Full Face Sticky is useful when the operation wants greater adhesive contact across the ticket, such as orders that will be moved, staged, transported, or handled multiple times before reaching the customer.
No. More adhesive is not automatically better for every application. Center Sticky can be easier to handle and remove, while Full Face Sticky provides broader contact. The best option depends on the packaging surface and workflow.
Yes. Some businesses may prefer Center Sticky for routine orders and Full Face Sticky for applications where stronger or broader attachment is desired. Confirm that the media is compatible with the printer being used.
PRINTER COMPATIBILITY
Not necessarily. Liner-free adhesive media should only be used in printers specifically designed or configured for it. Using sticky media in an incompatible printer can lead to feeding, cutting, or adhesive buildup problems.
A liner-free printer is engineered to handle adhesive-backed media without a disposable backing liner. Its paper path, rollers, cutter, and other components are designed to manage liner-free media properly.
It can work with compatible Epson TM-L90 liner-free configurations. Not every printer bearing the TM-L90 name should automatically be assumed to support liner-free adhesive media, so verify the exact configuration before ordering.
The Epson TM-L100 is designed for liner-free label applications. Always verify the media specifications and your exact printer setup before ordering.
Check the printer model, manual, media specifications, or configuration information for references to liner-free labels or liner-free adhesive media. If you're unsure, send Supply Chef your printer make and model and we'll help you identify the appropriate paper.

Consistent adhesive helps the ticket remain attached during normal handling while also feeding properly through compatible liner-free printers. Poor or inconsistent adhesive can contribute to lifting, residue, or printer issues.
Yes. Clear printing makes names, order numbers, modifiers, barcodes, and other information easier for employees to read quickly. Printer condition, settings, and media quality all influence print clarity.
Compatible direct thermal printers can print text, graphics, barcodes, QR codes, and logos. Readability depends on printer resolution, settings, printhead condition, and media quality.
TROUBLESHOOTING STICKY PAPER
Adhesion can be reduced by grease, moisture, condensation, dust, extreme temperatures, textured surfaces, or incompatible packaging. Apply the ticket to a clean, reasonably dry area and test the specific surface when necessary.
Possible causes include using a printer not designed for liner-free media, incorrect media dimensions, adhesive buildup, improper loading, debris, a worn cutter, or another mechanical issue. Verify printer compatibility first.
Liner-free printers require proper media and routine maintenance. Adhesive buildup may occur if incompatible paper is used or the printer is not cleaned according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
Light printing can be caused by a dirty or worn thermal printhead, incorrect density settings, improperly stored media, or an issue with paper compatibility.
Curl can be influenced by roll memory, temperature, humidity, storage, and media handling. Store rolls properly and use them in accordance with the printer manufacturer's recommendations.
A dirty or worn cutter, adhesive buildup, incompatible media, or printer settings may affect cutting. Follow the printer manufacturer's cleaning and maintenance procedures.
STORAGE & HANDLING
Store unused rolls in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight, excessive heat, moisture, oils, solvents, and chemicals. Keep rolls protected in their original packaging until needed.
Avoid long-term storage next to ovens, heat lamps, heaters, dish areas, or other sources of excessive heat or moisture. A cool, dry storeroom is preferable.
